The Cost of Peace: When Justice is Negotiable
Is lasting peace ever possible without holding perpetrators accountable for what they did?
This high-level panel explores the arduous relationship between international law and international politics, particularly in the context of today’s most pressing conflicts. Drawing on lessons from humanitarian work, international law, and political decision-making, the panel will examine whether and when justice should take a back seat to negotiation and the prospect of a settlement.
Recent arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court have added urgency to these questions, revealing once again the inexorable tension between legal accountability and overarching political considerations.
Join us for a timely and thought-provoking conversation on the dilemmas at the heart of modern peace efforts.
